Vennebu Vineyard
Sognefjord Winery has a rich history with Norwegian ties. Sognefjord is the largest fjord in Norway, which is a long, narrow body of water that reaches far inland surrounded by steep sides and cliffs. The winery is named after this specific fjord because of its connection to the Norwegian Myklebust family history.
The Myklebust family has lived on the land where the winery is located since 1959 when Paal and Ragnhild Myklebust settled down on their new farm land. Before moving to the United States, Paal Myklebust grew up in Hermansverk, Norway, located on the Sognefjord. Ragnhild grew up in Wisconsin Dells, but her relatives lived in Vestreim, Kaupanger, Norway, which is just on the other side of the Sognefjord.
After fighting for Norway in WWII, Paal immigrated through Ellis Island and lived in Cincinnati for work. Due to his time in the war, he was invited to the Dells to see Ragnhild Helland's slide show on Norway and Europe. This is where the two met and the rest is history. 65 years later, the Myklebust farm is still with the family.
Now, Paal and Ragnhild's granddaughters are opening Sognefjord Winery in their honor, in memory of their late father, Paal Jr., and all of the many fond memories they shared on the Myklebust farm with their grandparents, parents, aunts/uncles, and cousins. We look forward to you joining us in making more memories with a glass of wine in hand very soon. Skål!
